Seventy-Five: The Horizon and the Lighter Step...

For as long as I can remember, the number 75 has felt like an ending.

Not a dramatic or fearful close, but a quiet, persistent horizon line drawn across the landscape of my life. Even as a young child I carried the inner certainty that something essential would reach its natural conclusion around that age. It arrived early—solemn, matter-of-fact, woven into the texture of how I understood time. An old soul in a young body, already sensing the arc of this particular chapter before most children had learned to count their birthdays.

It was never purely fear, though uncertainty brushed against it at times. More often it felt like a companion: a soft, steady knowing that this earthly walk carried a natural boundary. That knowing shaped me. It deepened my compassion, sharpened my awareness of impermanence, and kept me from mistaking any single season for the whole truth. It was a mantle I did not choose lightly, and for decades it served its purpose—it kept me awake, tender, and attentive.

Now I am 74. The horizon line is close enough to see clearly. The calendar has brought me to the edge of the map I once drew in childhood. And in this tender threshold moment the old feeling is asking to be met anew—not with dread or denial, not with bargaining, but with gentle curiosity.

What if the “ending” at 75 is not the close of life itself, but the completion of carrying a certain weight?

What if it marks the natural conclusion of walking as the old soul who has felt ancient from the very beginning?

All these years that weight was real and necessary. It coloured decisions, deepened the gaze, and taught patience with unfolding revelations. But when a long apprenticeship has done its work, the burden no longer needs to be carried in the same way. The mantle can be set down with gratitude. The steps can lighten because the gravity has shifted.

At the same time, the outer world is making its own quiet statements. Some doors are already closing to me because of the number attached to my name. Others loom in the not-too-distant future. In society, numbers hold consequences—eligibility shifts, assumptions change, certain paths become narrower or more complicated simply because of the age we have reached. These external thresholds arrive whether we are ready or not, adding another layer to the inner horizon I have long sensed.

So perhaps 75 is not a wall, but a doorway.

Perhaps the ending is the ending of a long-held contract with heaviness—the release of an old way of moving through the world so that a new one can breathe. The remaining days (whether they stretch another decade, another year, or another season) can be walked without the old ballast. Still wise, still deep, yet free to move with lighter steps: the steps of someone who has completed a particular chapter of ancientness and is now invited into a quieter, more open maturity.

I already feel the shift beginning.
In the softer grip on what once felt urgent.
In the simple contentment that needs no explanation.
In the way the path ahead looks less like a countdown and more like an open field.

Whatever form the coming years take, the old knowing has been honoured, thanked, and allowed to transform—from burden into blessing, from weight into wings.

The path is lit.
The steps can be lighter.
And the sense of home that was always present is still here, waiting to be met with less gravity and more grace.
